Our Local Farmer’s Market

October 28, 2016 By Robin Fannon

Hitting the local farmer’s market is a Saturday morning ritual.  Our downtown city market’s popularity has grown impressively and recently expanded to a new location. We have come to rely on our local farmers and merchants;  Red Wagon Farm the organic produce and pastured egg folks, Maureen the orchid lady, John my favorite bread guy, Levone for organic fruit.

My better half thinks I have a produce hoarding problem! But seriously, beautiful organic produce is a joy and it inspires countless healthy meals.  For protein there is an organic chicken and grass-fed meat vendor (this makes my better half happy!).  Like anything else, it is necessary to carefully choose vendors who really are authentically growing and selling what they claim, and not just re-selling conventional produce.

While conventional produce may look shiny and unblemished, once you taste the difference between a fresh, organic beefsteak tomato and one that has been gassed into ripeness you will never look back!  One valuable, money saving tip;  check out the Environmental Working Group’s “dirty 12 and clean 15”  chart which outlines which produce crops are the most impacted by chemical sprays so you can make an informed choice for you family.
